A Youth Centre for St George

Hi, Welcome to YouthZone's web page. We though this would be a good way to show you what YouthZone is about and also an easy way for you to contact us. If you haven't visited or heard of us before, we are a youth based organization created to assist young people in any need they may have. We also run various youth events, groups, programs and fun activities that young people can get involved in.

YouthZone is a not for-profit organisation that was established by The Pole Depot Neighbourhood Centre, (our Parent Body) because of the growing need to have services available to young people aged 11-24. Over the last 15 years, YouthZone has had 36,000 young people use our youth services or been involved in our events.

Youthzone is seeking volunteers and casual workers to help out where needed. Please contact us for more infomation.

What do you mean by Assisting Young People? Ok, this question is actually a lot bigger than it looks. What this means is we make the confusing or difficult situations easier for you to understand or deal with. Whether it's a Legal matter, Centrelink trouble, though to finding out TAFE course information, we can let you know your options, give you guidance (if wanted) and/or intervene with the matter. We don't just help you when dealing with institutes; we can help with any private or difficult situation that you may be in. Also we can arrange for our personal counselor to meet with you here for a private chat about anything that is bothering you.

Where is YouthZone? We have just moved office, if you thought we disappeared we haven't. We are now situated at: 143 Forest Rd Hurstville 2220 - Please use the Forest St entrance . The Av Drop-in will be moving to the new office but this will be around September 2004. This site will be updated when the change takes place.

What We Do At YouthZone

• YouthZone is continually running these projects:
  
  • "The Av" Youth Drop-in Center. A Free Entertainment Centre for young people. Driven by Athena and Latif.
    
  • Community Development. Individual case work and group work, includes programs like "Jumpstart" looking for work. Headed by Edgee.
    
  • Street Work in St George. Meeting young people on the street and assisting where needed as well as informing young people about youth related issues and events. Ran by Dave and Diego.
    
• This multi-purpose youth facility is also the home of these services:
  
  • GLYSSN. A project aimed to assist same sex attracted young people and also to educate the wider community. Glyssn is running now and is driven by David.
    
  • The Brokerage project, which assists homeless people over 18 years of age both in St George and Sutherland Shire. This project will be available from July 2004.
    
  • The READY project (resources & education on alcohol and other drugs for young people). Staff on this project provide counseling and advice for young people regarding drug or alcohol issues. This is available in July 2004.
    
  • The Up-Zone Clinic ‘UZ’ provides free services for young people under 25 including a Doctor (4-6pm Friday), Sexual Health nurse (4-6pm Thursday), women’s pregnancy and parenting support (group 11-1pm Thursday), and alcohol and other drug advice and support. This service is co-ordinated by Andrew of the READY project.

YouthZone is a service of the Pole Depot Neighborhood Centre and is funded by the Department Of Community Services.
